Wallpaper Calculator

Work out how many rolls your room needs before you fall for a pattern.

LET’S WORK IT OUT

Your project estimate

Counted as 21 sq ft each.
Counted as 15 sq ft each.
Pattern matching and trimming reduce what a roll really covers.

Add your measurements to see an estimate.

A planning estimate for your shopping list. Check your product’s coverage and the needs of your own project before ordering.

Wallpaper is easy to underestimate. Pattern repeats, trimming and the last awkward strip all use paper. Start with your room measurements and enter the usable coverage stated for your chosen roll.

This is an area-based shopping estimate. For a bold pattern or a room with several corners, check the number of full-height drops before placing your order.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the room and count doors and windows, exactly as you would for paint.
  2. Look at the pattern repeat on the wallpaper you have chosen — the bigger the repeat, the less usable coverage per roll.
  3. Select the matching usable coverage value and calculate.
  4. Add one spare roll from the same dye lot for repairs; you cannot buy a matching roll years later.

How wallpaper rolls are calculated

Net wall area = 2 x (length + width) x height, minus doors and windows. Rolls = net area / usable coverage per roll. Usable coverage — not the printed roll area — is the honest number, because every drop must be cut longer than the wall and the pattern aligned with its neighbour, which turns the trimmings into waste.

A QUICK WORKED EXAMPLE

The same 12 ft x 10 ft room with 8 ft ceilings, one door and two windows has 301 sq ft of net wall. At 30 sq ft of usable coverage per roll, that is 10.03 rolls — so 11 rolls to buy, or 12 with a spare for repairs.

A few things worth checking

  • Dividing the wall area by the full 56 sq ft printed on the roll and ordering half of what the job needs.
  • Ordering rolls weeks apart so the second batch comes from a different dye lot with a slightly different colour.
  • Forgetting chimney breasts, alcoves and the wall above a picture rail — measure every surface that will be papered.

Your questions, answered

Are double rolls different from single rolls?

The result is in single-roll equivalents. Check how your supplier defines and packages a roll. Only divide the result by two if each purchased pack provides twice the usable coverage of the single-roll option you selected, then round up to whole packs.

How does the tool allow for pattern matching?

The usable-coverage choices are 35, 30 and 25 sq ft per single roll. Lower coverage increases the roll count, but these options do not calculate your exact pattern repeat. Compare full-height drops, trimming and matching against the label for your chosen paper.

Does the estimate check full-height drops?

No. This is an area-based estimate after standard door and window deductions. It does not lay out individual strips, match a pattern or reuse offcuts. Check a drop-by-drop plan before ordering when those details affect the quantity.

Should I order all the paper at once?

Check that every roll carries the same batch or dye-lot number when it arrives, before opening it. Compare the total usable coverage and any spare-roll allowance with your supplier before placing the order.
